Location: 372 South Main Street, Wilkes Barre PA
The updates keep coming for the former pitched-roof Acmes of Wilkes Barre, PA. The South Main Street store, which is now a Volunteers of America Thrift Store, is undergoing an exterior makeover. The store first made an appearance on the blog as part of the Wyoming Valley Tour back in 2009. Photos for the tour were provided by James of the Wyoming Valley Blog. James was kind enough to send in the pictures seen here of the former Wilkes Barre Acme in deconstruction mode. We had an extensive tour of this location last October thanks to Ross K. You can visit that post by clicking here. The interior is very interesting as it still has many elements of the Checkerboard Arch decor still in place. Quite remarkable since this is has had three different tenants since the Acme left. If you scroll through that post, you'll also see the pitched-roof over on Route 309 being deconstructed. Now, more of the South Street store...
Before and after...
Have to wonder if the interior Acme sign is still up. Fascinating to see how the mansard rough was attached to the facade..
Thanks to James for sending these in! You'll want to check out James' pictures of the Pittston store. A pitched-roof model which is now Quinns Market. To this day, elements of the Checkerboard Arch decor remain in place at that store as well, as does the interior pitched-roof. Click here to have a look!
